How long does it take to make a murderer? Sixteen years ago, DI Joseph Stone's family's life was destroyed when a ritualistic animal slaughter, by a killer nicknamed the "Midwinter Butcher," led directly to the car crash that stole their son away. Now living alone on a narrowboat in the heart of Oxford, Joseph has tried to put his shattered life back together. But every year on the anniversary of his son's death, the killer has struck again claiming more animal lives. Joseph is certain that these are practice killings, and it's only a matter of time before they escalate things to murder. But his is a lone voice in the force, and his DSU won't allocate the resources necessary to crack the case. Then Joseph's worst nightmares are realised when the first victim is murdered.
